What is Spice Box?

The Spice Box is a student-run restaurant associated with the University of Illinois Hospitality Management Program.

Each Spice Box meal has two menu selections, a Prix Fixe four-course meal option, and a special two-course meal option. Prices vary by meal. Specialty wine and beverages are available.

Events are held on most Wednesdays and Fridays during spring semesters.

Reservations

Reservations are available every 15 minutes from 5:30-8:30 pm.

Call 217-333-6520 to request a reservation or book online through OpenTable for each event.

Ayutthaya Renaissance – by Neil Thammavijitdej

This restaurant concept is inspired by Thailand’s Ayutthaya Kingdom (13th-17th century). The theme is intended to provide insight into history, culture, and art during that time period. The modern Thai dishes in the menu below share roots that are influenced by Thailand’s diplomatic relationships with European countries and neighboring nations like Laos, China, and others.

Prix Fixe ($39)

  • Bread Service: Rice Cakes – Popped rice swirls with cane sugar caramel. Served with hot Thai tea.
  • Appetizer: Curry Puffs – Curry seasoned potatoes in a deep-fried pastry shell serve with basil micro greens and a swizzle of sweet and sour sauce.
  • Salad: Bite Salad – Red leaf lettuce served alongside chopped shallots,red finger peppers, ginger, and lime. To be topped with lemongrass, galangal, ginger and soy infused palm syrup.
  • Entrée: Congee – Rice porridge topped with baked tofu, sautéd shiitake mushrooms, roasted garlic, fried shallots, and a donut stick. Garnished with chili oil, pickled mustard, sesame oil, and mushroom soy sauce.
  • Dessert: Mung Bean Dumplings – Sticky rice flour morsels coated with mung beans and freshly shaved coconut, topped with toasted sesame seeds and sugar.

Special ($29)

  • Bread Service: Rice Cakes – Popped rice swirls with cane sugar caramel. Served with hot Thai tea.
  • Salad: Bite Salad – Red leaf lettuce served alongside chopped shallots,red finger peppers, ginger, and lime. To be topped with lemongrass, galangal, ginger and soy infused palm syrup.
  • Entrée: Basil Tofu – Fragrant basil stir-fried tofu, garlic, red finger peppers, and green beans combined with sweet & savory soy sauce. Served with jasmine rice and fried eggplant.

Dessert À La Carte ($8)

  • Dessert: Mung Bean Dumplings – Sticky rice flour morsels coated with mung beans and freshly shaved coconut, topped with toasted sesame seeds and sugar.

Featured Beverage ($7)

  • Thai Magic Margarita – a colorful spin on the classic lime margarita featuring Thai blue butterfly pea flowers.
